Yellow Weavers.

Interesting little birds and when they build nest the ‘wife’ will unpick until she finds something to her liking. But something very interesting which we experienced while we were having lunch at the West Coast restaurant (We went to see the Wildflowers). On the tables were those little envelopes with cane sugar (in white little bags) and artificial sweetener (in red little envelopes). Whilst these weavers were so furiously building nest they would swoop down and take an envelope to eat in the nest. And most of them took the RED envelopes with the artificial sweetener
Colour speaks!
Not such a good photo

They are very ‘common’ in South Africa. The male is yellow, the female greyish. And they can strip a tree of leaves until she finds something that pleases her.

Yes they are fascinating to watch. That’s funny that they preferred the sweetener rather than the sugar. 😉 Red is known to be an ‘energy’ colour, so perhaps that’s what it was. 😉

I am sure they do not know the difference because both taste sweet and as they are ‘wired’ to go for colourful flowers (in order to polinate them too) I suppose the same would apply here.

Poor beautiful birds, don’t they realize how much healthier and yummier real sugar is, no yucky after taste? I would so love to see birds and squirrels of color, as where I currently reside they are always so colorless, so grey, it makes me sad, but probably meant to make them less tasty to predators. I remember those animals in Switzerland being so rich in color, and returning to the states to find them so lacking in color, it was always very befuddling, as they could have been a different species all together, it just struck me odd as a child.
What I miss most is seeing Hedgehogs and/or porcupines, they are my favorites, and one sees them often in Switzerland. They do not exist in the states for some reason, and I so miss seeing them, I also miss the snails after the rain, as my sister and I would collect all the beautiful unused shells, we had quite the collection.
Animals are wonderful!!! I am yet to meet one I do not like, too bad I cannot say the same for humanity. They are usually so kind (except for those stubborn elephants:)), so forgiving, I support so many animal rights organizations, as I/we love them so, as do my two girls. We have two hounds, one purchased after I filed for divorce, as they asked for one when I announced that I had filed as the Psychopath did not care much for animals either way, yet, he would do a good job pretending/acting like he did, and the second hound, the female the girls and I rescued about 8 months ago.
The two hounds are the most delicious things to me next to my girls. They are true mates (one male one female), they like to eat from the same bowl often, as I do cook for them everyday, they like to drink together out of the same bowl too, they look for one another constantly throughout the house and outdoors. They are the best example of true love, true companionship humans can learn from. The male one, so very delicious and a bit rotund, he is my firstborn, and he is very protective, a bit chunky, yet loves to eat and sit on my lap, when the female is not monopolizing it, and he’s nearly 70 pounds, hardly a lap dog. The female is delicate, half his size, she has hip and knee problems, and I’m pretty sure she had broken her tail, or someone had broken it for her at some point before we got her as she too is so very delicious, don’t know what she came from, but know she looks at me everyday with thanks. She loves nothing more than to sleep on me. She is under two years old, she loves to be babied, and I love to nurture her this way, she missed out on it, and thus, cannot ever get enough. I keep my laptop on her as she refuses to move from me, if she’s not with her male partner, or “brother from another mother”, who chooses to rest on the opposite couch, as he likes to cuddle and then have his own space, she likes to be attached to me, and I assume when I leave them for errands she sleeps on top of him.

They see these red sachets like they see coloured flowers, but I am not sure whether they will continue eating the sweetener after they have tasted it. To me artificial sweetener tastes terrible, I would rather go without . We have many birds here as we have lots of big trees in the garden. Some leave in winter others like the green cape parrots remain because they eat the pecan nuts.
Somehow people who love animals bond I think. I only contribute to animal welfare and nothing to people.
