50 Years ago a bird dropped a Syringa tree seed onto a 3,5 billion year old granite rock. Eventually from a minute seedling an enormous tree grew and the roots broke the rock apart. Last night we heard a crash and discovered part of the tree disintegrated. I loved this tree and the wonderful shade it casts in summer. Hi nature, you have a plan?
Trees get old too

One of our neighbours didn’t like their tree so got someone who couldn’t cut it down properly and then filled it with poison ๐ฆ
Another neighbour moaned about one of our trees.
Yet another neighbour came round the day after we moved in (different house) demanding we cut the overhanging branches. Immediately.
What is it with people and trees?

I love trees so that I cannot understand at all. Some of the trees here are getting really old but it is physically painful for me to let go. I do not much like my neighbors pine tree because of the needles which are very acidic but that is about it. In a dry country like ours we should be careful what we plant but the suburb where we live has the most trees in S A I am proud to say.

I thought Ark’s Observatory had the most trees ever. We have few by us (innSpain) and people cut them down at random. The UK was different. Similar issues, no light, no sun, want them gone โฆ
Spain is different. We had two nispero trees. Beautiful shade, lovely fruit. But, they were growing in a wall. And breaking it. Planted by the previous owner who wouldn’t have to cope with broken walls. I really must write a post about ethical tree removal. Boils down to pee and chicken poo.

Nope when Bryanston was developed about I guess 60 plus years ago it was peri urban, large stands most an acre or more. Many trees of course . Things have changed and how, now part of the greater Sandton and townhouses go up….8 on an acres ๐We still have an acre upkeep a bit much but the space makes up for it. When I google our house I cannot see it for the trees.
Yes you should blog about the value of trees…

It suffered the fate of all living things – and as they all must! BTW, trees can be a damn nuisance and you plant a Norfolk Pine in your little suburban garden at your peril!
Nov 12, 2016 @ 15:33:32
I know about pines and their needles are acidic. My neighbor has one which sheds its needles onto my plants. But I am not a complaining neighbor I suffer in silence ๐

When looking at some of the local houses you can see the effect of seeds on walls and driveways. It`s amazing what damage a small seed can do.The early quarry owners used a similar method for breaking large rocks but they used water in the cold climates.

That is actually the story of the Earth formed by weather water and even plants. Over time it becomes major changes.
