In “The Garden of Evening Mists”by Tan Twang Eng , one of the main characters, Magnus Pretorius, was a veteran of the Anglo-Boer War . These are the less graphic and harrowing photographs.
Lord Kitchener was a war criminal. He was never stripped of this title neither have I ever seen an apology of sorts.
If you can stomach it watch the photographs. This is no longer taught in schools – but of course!

Dis so waar.

Winter is coming and the dogs and cape parrots are eating the pecan nuts all day long. Wish I had you photographic talent for taking photos of these but I do not really deserve a better camera. With sound recording of course because you can hear these beautiful birds.
(As for my blog, do not forget that I taught history at Marist Bros many many moons ago. 🙂 )

If the full history of the period is considered, and particularly from the personal experiences of family members on both sides of the conflict, a rather different picture emerges. Sins were of omission and bungling administration rather than commission. A response to the so successful Commando tactics led to this reaction. The Boer woman (and even older children) had become supporters and even combatants, and provided havens for those returning from raids. Kitchener and his men eradicated and displaced the ants’ nests, but did not deliberately eradicate the ants.
The activists provided the support which should have been there all along, but had been denied by bumbling bureaucracy.

Sure I did just that, considering the full history of the period for my dissertation with hundreds of references. . You say Women and children became supporters, is that not exactly what happens in every single war, why support the enemy? Is that reason to throw them in a concentration camp and feed them glass? This is a proven fact. Look at the mortality rate. That should tell you something.
But the history books are written by the victors as Churchill said never objective and not always factual.

War is evil. Women and children being bombed to bits without even the excuse that they were providing ‘cover’ for men on covert operations is equally shocking. Also, look at the record of other ‘concentration camps’, notably those of the Japanese or Germans. Being employed or put in charge of those seems to allow the scum of any race to rise to the top. The glass and the mortality rates were not policy, and the veracity of documents trying to prove they were is invariably questionable.

Interesting book I came across was Unconditional Hatred by Russell Grenfell, R.N. (Retired Captain in the British Navy)

It is interesting, indeed. I found it amazing that just after being introduced to Daleen Matthee’s concept ‘die bloubokkie se gal sit nie in sy kop nie’ by de Wets Wild, here are other instances by the score.

“A turning point in the death rate in the Boers camp came about by November 1901, after Emily Hobhouse of the Fawcett Ladies Commision revealed the conditions in the camps to the British public.” ► Thank God she did!
